As we headed into Ahmeek, I made a turn into town.  From previous trips to the Copper Country, I had learned about a road out of Ahmeek that takes you along the lakeshore into Eagle River.  Most people headed to Eagle River just follow M-26 and don't realize its there.

Again it's the explorer in me always seeming to look for the road less traveled.  In the above map you can see a gray road leaving Ahmeek heading over to Lake Superior and then up to Eagle River.   As we pulled into Ahmeek, I got a bit lost if that's possible in such a small town.  Basically you turn left at the first street coming into Ahmeek and then you should see signs directing you to Five Mile Point Road.  I went one road to far and had to go back.   If you miss it like I did just make a couple right hand turns and it  till you find it.

Five Mile Point Road as its called is a decent road to ride.   As we cruised along I found myself trying to remember what all was on this road.   It wasn't that long and we reached the shoreline.  Soon we passed by the Sand Hills Lighthouse and my memory started coming back to me.  Sand Hills Lighthouse is now a bed and breakfast, but it was once the largest manned lighthouses built on the Great Lakes.   It's tucked off the road, but you will catch a glimpse of it as you ride by.  If you like lighthouses that are also bed and breakfasts, there is another one up in Big Bay, Michigan.

As we pulled into Eagle River, we hooked up with M-26 again.  There you'll find the Eagle River Lighthouse on a bay.  M-26 winds around the lakeshore where you can catch a glimpse of it over your shoulder.  We were now on one of the best roads for viewing Lake Superior in the U.P.   As we road along through the curves and over the rolling road I couldn't help think how nice it would be to own a little cabin on Lake Superior.

It wasn't long before reached Eagle Harbor.  As we road across the bridge,  I took a left and drove down to the lakeshore.  It was time to park the bike and do a little stretching.   We found a little beach pullout with a couple of picnic tables next to this lakeside motel and parked the bike.    Lake Superior is by far the best of the Great Lakes.  Crystal clear and ice cold, and while it's not much of a lake for swimming, 've been know to take a dip on a hot day.  So I took a walk down and put my fingers in the water.  Ice cold!  There would be no swimming today.

Eagle Harbor

After about twenty minutes of walking the beach, we got back on the bike and started towards Copper Harbor  This stretch of M-26 is simply a fun ride. The road curves along the lake shore with dips and small hills the road.   I was really getting into it until I caught up to a couple Honda Goldwings stuck behind a slow car.   Just about the time I was thinking of passing they took a sudden right and for  some reason I just followed them.  Soon I realize we were headed up Brockway Mountain.  You can't visit Copper Harbor without a ride up Brockway Mountain, but before my wife will ride it again, it needs to be repaved.  She was in tears by time we got to the top.  The road right now is rough, being paved and patched the whole way up the mountain.

From the top of Brockway Mountain you get maybe one of the best views of Lake Superior anywhere.  I think only the overlook in Munising, MI. would compare.  While we were talking to the two Goldwing riders from Illinois,  a group of cruisers pulled in.  There seemed to be one of everything except for maybe a BMW.  So far I was really impressed by the number of motorcycles making the Copper Harbor run.

A gathering of cruisers on Brockway Mountain

The viewing area was crowded with tourists so we didn't stay long and decided to follow the two Goldwings we drove up with back down the mountain.  As you wind down off the mountain there are several other pullovers offering great views.   When I saw one that looked like it offered a great overlook of Copper Harbor I pulled over.   I don't think my wife was too excited about this second stop.  I'm sure she wanted was off this rough road and was thinking about something to eat by now.

Overlooking Copper Harbor, MI from Brockway Mountain

Still it was a view I couldn't pass up taking some pictures of.  So after a few quick shots,  tired of riding, hungry and thirsty, we climbed back on the bike and eased our way down the steep winding road into Copper Harbor.
