I love Highway 41 out of Copper Harbor. It's simply a great road to ride on a motorcycle. The road twists and turns through the woods that almost covers the road. In some places, it's like riding through a tunnel. When I finally came out of it, I just wanted to turn the bike and round and do it again, only this time faster! It was one of those times that I would have liked to have been riding solo. Once out of the woods, US-41 is still a nice ride back towards Houghton. As we cruised along I found myself thinking about how nice a hot tub would feel about now. It had been a long day and we were both beat. As we approached Calumet I saw a sign for Gay, MI. Remembering a write on the bar there, I turned and asked my wife if she were up for a beer at a Gay Bar. She just smiled and said go for it. Gay came about when the Mohawk Mining Company built a copper stamp mill in the town. Like other stamp mills, about the only thing left standing is the smokestack. There isn't much when you pull into town so it's not hard to find the Gay Bar. There were about four Harleys parked in front of the bar when we pulled up and a "motorcycles welcome" banner hanging on the outside of the bar.
We found a couple stools and ordered a beer. Unfortunately no tap beer, but the place seemed to have a friendly enough crowd. For you gay bikers, this really isn't a gay bar although they seem to make the best of the name. Anyway we had our beer and then decided it was time to head back to Twin Lakes. The thought of the hot tub was really taking root now. Page 6 of 7
