Copper Harbor, Michigan

It the end of one of Michigan's best known motorcycling highways you'll find the small coastal town of Copper Harbor.  t was a bright sunny Sunday afternoon when my wife and I rolled into town.  We had been to Copper Harbor many times over the years, but this was our first trip on the bike.  Riding up Highway 41 along the lakeshore of Lake Superior is a sure joy on a motorcycle.

The Town of copper Harbor

Figuring first I'd better top off the tank I pulled into the gas station.  Well, it was once a gas station.  The place looked like it had been vacant for a bit.  No sooner had I pulled in when this lone Harley rider followed me in.  Both of us were a little disappointed the place was closed and couldn't remember seeing another station when we road in.  I heard him mutter under his breath that there better be one or he was in trouble.  Later I found out from talking with the bartender at Zik's Bar that apparently a couple years back the owner of that station pulled up and left in the middle of the night, leaving the town without a gas station.   Now there is only one gas station in Copper Harbor and he's located at the south end of town at the light, but was told that in the event of emergencies you can give him a call and he'd open up the station for you.  You can't beat that for small town Yooper hospitality.

There are two place my wife and I both like to stop when we're in Copper Harbor.  One is the Mariner North and the other Zik's Bar.  Today it was Zik's first as we pulled up to the cozy little bar with the great murals on the walls.  The bar was empty when we walked in. but the bartender said it had been rocking the night before.  When I later asked if she like a bikers she said sure "They take less parking spaces and we can crowd more in the place".  You have to love her honesty.   Turns out she also owns a motel in town and did the town taxes.    Zik's is a good place to relax and enjoy a good burger and I recommend a visit if you're in town.

Zik's in Copper Harbor

With a full tummy, we decided to walk it off.  Leaving the bike at Zik's, we started at one end of town and visited all the shops along the way.  On the way we found a nice board walk that led down to the shore where we kicked back on a bench.  There wasn't much going on.  An occasional wave-runner went by, but all in all a pretty peaceful day.  Kind of what you would expect in a little coastal town.

Another good place is the Mariner North, which also serves up some good chow.  A larger place with a lot more activity, I recommend fellow riders check out both Zik's and the Mariner North when in Copper Harbor.

Kicking back in Copper Harbor

I always recommend an over nighter in Copper Harbor.  A lot takes place when the sun goes down and it would be a shame to miss it.   After buying a  couple of reminders of your trip, we walked back to the bike.
