Michigan State Map) As I continued up Highway M-35, the fog grew into a light rain and the road splatter started to work its way into my pant legs. I probably should pull over and get out my rain suit I thought, but I really didn't feel like stopping again. Besides I didn't really mind it. The thought of riding in the rain never thrills me, but today neither I nor the bike seem to be bothered by it. A short time later I rode into Escanaba. Looking around as I rode through, I didn't notice many changes since my last time here. A couple new business, but it was still pretty much the way I remembered it. As the second largest town in the U.P., Escanaba has about everything you could want. At another time and I might of taken the scenic ride down Lakeshore Drive past the Escanaba Marina, but not today. As I made the ride out of Wells and started the sweep into Gladstone I felt the wind and rain blowing harder against me. Making the turn on Lakeshore Drive, I cruised along the beach area. It's where as a family we spent a lot of time enjoying the water and beach. I was headed for campground, but then at the last minute I decided to take a ride though town. I had this urge to ride by the old house. For ten years we had lived in Gladstone and it had been hard to leave this friendly little town. Still every Yooper needs to make a living so I had to pack up the family and leave when the right opportunity came a long. When I saw the old place was for sale I had a sudden urge to stop and ask the selling price. It sure brought back some great memories looking at it. I think sometimes if my wife and I weren't so settled in Wisconsin, we would seriously consider retiring back in Gladstone. Looking across the street I could see my neighbor wasn't home so I the idea of free room and board was out. About now I was really feeling the effects of the ride. My butt and tail bone were hurting and sharp these sharp pains were spiking down my neck into my back. However the thought of setting up a tent and sleeping on the wet ground tonight wasn't appealing to me right now. So even though the campground was probably open, I decided to park the bike in the Super Value parking lot and give my sister a call. My sister lives near Munising and has always had a spare bed for her wandering brother. It would be well worth another hour on the road to have a warm, dry place to crash for the night. If she wasn't home I figured I head over to Wally's Bar and wait out the rain. As luck would have it, she answered the phone. In a matter of minutes I was shifting gears putting Gladstone behind me as I headed up Highway 41 towards Munising. Life was good to me today.
