Seeing it all again from my bike is like I'm seeing it for the first time.

Lake Gogebic Border Run

I had originally planned to stage a group ride out of Marenisco called the Lake Gogebic Border Run, but ran into some logistics problems and had to call it off.

Still by time the weekend was over, Pat and I had managed to ride the entire route in pieces.   The planned route is displayed on the on the first page of this write-up.  It's a good day ride with stops at Bond and Agate Falls with rides along both sides of Lake Gogebic.  However the best motorcycling road in the loop happens when you cross the border into Wisconsin and take Highway B through Northern Wisconsin between Land O' Lakes and Marenisco.

There are also a number of other rides you can do from the Lake Gogebic area.  To the North you have the Keweenaw Peninsula and short ride over to Highway 45 and then up Highway M-26 to Copper Harbor is probably some of the best motorcycling you're going to find anywhere in Upper Michigan.

A good ride out of Bergland is to take Highway 64 through White Pine and up to Silver City where you can ride to Lake of the Clouds.  From there track south through the Porcupine Mountains State Park.  At the south end of the park you'll find the Presque Isle Campground.  The Presque Isle River runs through the campground and features some of the best waterfalls in the U.P.

If you like waterfalls consider taking a ride west to Bessemer and hooking up with Highway 513 for a ride to the little known Black River Recreational Area.  The Black Rider is one wild river and it too has along the way to Lake Superior you find several great waterfalls.  Don't forget to top off the gas tank as Highway 513 doesn't a place to gas up and could be a long walk if you run out of gas.

The Lake Gogebic Area is known for its great snowmobiling, but I've heard that the area is working with the DNR to link up it's great off road trails and I suspect that before long you'll see more ATVs pulled up along side you when you visit a local area bar.

Besides some great road, bars and saloons, the Lake Gogebic area also has some great places to eat.  On a local recommendation, my wife and I stopped for dinner one night on our ride around the east side of Lake Gogebic.  The place was called the Root Cellar and they serve up a pretty darn good prime rib dinner.  As we've come to expect, Upper Michigan has some of the friendliest business owner you'll find anywhere.  The same goes for the Root Cellar.  It's a place we'd recommend you stop at if you're in the area.

In September we plan to head back to the Lake Gogebic area to take a Fall Color ride.  The area is well know for it's Fall colors and if you can catch the right day, a long slow ride through the bright forest colors is something to behold.
