Whitefish Point
(Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum)

Whitefish Point makes for a great road trip on a motorcycle.  I believe Whitefish Point is probably one of the top five most frequented destinations for motorcycle riders traveling through Michigan's Upper Peninsula.   Whitefish Point located at the northeastern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and stretches out into Lake Superior forming the western shoreline of Whitefish Bay.   It's here you'll find the Whitefish Point Lighthouse and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.

In 1849 the Whitefish Point Light became one of the first lights on Lake Superior.  Known as the Graveyard of Ships, more ships have been lost off Whitefish Point than at any other location on Lake Superior.  They number in the hundreds but probably the best known shipwreck was the Edmund Fitzgerald.  Unfortunately in its 150 year history, the only time the light wasn't working was the night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down.

My wife and I last visited Whitefish Point a few years back.  It was a beautiful, warm sunny day when we pulled up.  The parking lot was already filling up and I noticed quite a few bikes already there.  If you're riding in from the west along M-28, I recommend taking Highway 123 up through the town of Newberry to Paradise and then up to Whitefish Point.  Along that route you have plenty to see and do along the way in including Taquanamon Falls.  If you're riding in from Sault Ste. Marie, I'd follow the lakeshore around through Brimley.   From St. Ignace, you have a number of options, but I'd probably shoot up to Sault Ste. Marie and do the lakeshore ride.

Of all the lighthouses in Upper Michigan that I've been too. Whitefish Point Light always seems to have the biggest tourist draw. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the Shipwreck Museum and the Edmund Fitzgerald story.  Certainly a different setting than the remote Crisp Point Light which sits down the coast line to the west.

I've place a link to the Shipwreck Museum on the top right corner of this page.  There is a lot to see there so you may want to click on the sign and find out more about the place.  They even have an overnight program where you can stay at the lighthouse.  Usually I'm not one for museums, but I found the Shipwreck Museum fascinating, so don't leave without checking it out. I always try to read some history about the places I ride too.   You might want to read a little about shipwrecks on the Great Lakes before visiting the museum.

Sincerely,

Dave Johnson
